Cathedral in the Clouds Big Boulder Creek, White Clouds Wilderness, Idaho, 1972. At the end of the rugged road to the old Livingston Mill, the trail meanders through Quicksand Meadows and then rises toward a steep glacial moraine. Above are these White Cloud spires whose shape and color resemble a gothic cathedral. Leica IIIF, Summitar 50mm lens, Ektrachrome 100 transparency
Chinese Wall from the South White Clouds Wilderness, Idaho, 1972. A tributary of Big Boulder Creek descends from Tin Cup Lake at the foot of the Chinese Wall. This enormous wall is a showcase of geology with bands of very dark and very light rock layered like lasagna and thrust into the sky. Above the lake is a steep saddle called the Gun Sight, where the wall can be crossed, visible just to the right of center in this photograph. Tin Cup Lake from the Chinese Wall White Clouds Wilderness, Idaho, 1972. This view looks south from the Gun Sight over the deep blue Tin Cup Lake and an unnamed lake. Peering over the north side of the saddle you are confronted with a huge and very steep talus slide descending to Crater Lake. Careful footwork is required to traverse the talus eastward toward more solid ground. Leica IIIF, Summitar 50mm lens, Ektrachrome 100 transparency
Chinese Wall from the North White Clouds Wilderness, Idaho, 1972. This is the view looking back from solid ground at the north side of the Chinese Wall and Crater Lake below. This image is a composite of two Ektachrome transparencies developed in a home darkroom. The leftmost 20% comes from an unmounted end-of-roll slide which I chanced upon after scanning the first slide. It completed the panorama so nicely that I spent hours touching it up and merging it in with Adobe Photoshop. Leica IIIF, Summitar 50mm lens, Ektrachrome 100 transparency
Boulder Hopping South of Castle Peak White Clouds Wilderness, Idaho, 1974. The trail linking Little Boulder Creek and Big Boulder Creek is a grueling but rewarding hike. This is one of many 'Wow, grab the camera!' spots to be found throughout the White Clouds wilderness. Leica IIIF, Summitar 50mm lens, Kodachrome 64 transparency
Post Mountain Drip Noisy Lake, White Clouds Wilderness, Idaho, 1974. Noisy Lake gets its name from the steady summer drip of ice melt from the northern flanks of Castle Peak. The drip zone is visible in the black-stained rocks on the far side at left. The summit of the small peak (upper left) was not quite visible in the slide, so I added it in using a little Photoshop reconstructive surgery and a wee bit of artistic license. Leica IIIF, Summitar 50mm lens, Kodachrome 64 transparency
Misty Mountain Hop Quiet Lake, White Clouds Wilderness, Idaho, 1974. Above Noisy Lake on the north flanks of Castle Peak lies Quiet Lake. It is serene and surprisingly large, just below the timber line. The drifting fog here led me to borrow the title of the Led Zeppelin song, Misty Mountain Hop. Upper Mesa Falls Henry's Fork, Snake River, Idaho, 2003. My great grandfather photographed these falls from the river below ('Mesa Falls' in 'Antique Restorations'). This view is from one of the tourist overlooks near the brink. Nikon N90 on tripod, 28-70mm AFD Nikkor lens @ 28mm, 1/2 second, Fuji Sensia II 100 transparency
